Career in Tax Consultancy
India has over 6.3 crore MSMEs, and every single one of them needs a tax professional. The myth that “Only CAs can practice tax” is stopping you from a lucrative career. Here is your roadmap to becoming an Independent Tax Consultant.
Is a CA Degree Mandatory?
No. While CAs have exclusive rights to audit accounts, anyone with the right knowledge can:
- File GST Returns
- File Income Tax Returns
- Maintain Books of Accounts
- Manage TDS Compliance
- Register Companies/LLPs
Step-by-Step Roadmap
Phase 1: Knowledge Building (Months 1-3)
Don’t start selling yet. Master the tools. Learn Tally Prime thoroughly. Understand the GST portal workflow. Take practical courses like the ones at VJGuru that force you to work on dummy data.
Phase 2: Certification (Month 4)
To gain credibility, you can appear for exams to become a:
- GST Practitioner (GSTP): An exam conducted by NACIN for graduates. Allows you to legally represent clients.
- TRP (Tax Return Preparer): An income tax department initiative.
Phase 3: Acquisition (Month 5 onwards)
Start with your “Warm Market” – friends, family, and local shopkeepers. Offer to file their returns for a nominal fee or even free for the first time. The goal is to build a portfolio, not profit, in the beginning.
Required Tech Stack
To run a modern practice, you don’t need a fancy office. You need:
- A good laptop.
- High-speed internet.
- Accounting Software (Tally/Zoho).
- Compliance Software (ClearTax/CompuTax) for bulk filing.
“The only thing standing between you and your consultancy firm is the belief that you need permission to start. You don’t. You need skill.”
